Webinar Overview:

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has Conditions for Coverage (CfC) that every freestanding ambulatory surgery center (ASC) must meet if the ambulatory surgery center want paid for Medicare and Medicaid patients. The standards apply to all patients treated in the ASC including worker comp and patients with commercial insurance. These standards became effective on May 18, 2009 and contained 167 pages and 267 tag numbers.

CMS made changes s December 30, 2009 and December 2010. CMS states the ASC must have a safe and sanitary environment, properly constructed, equipped, and maintained to protect the safety and health of the patient. This section is very important and includes type of emergency equipment, life safety code issues, and training and competence of staff. It also contains many infection control standards. CMS got a $10 million grant to enforce infection control standards which are some of the most common areas where ASCs are out of compliance. Do you know the nine pieces of emergency equipment that must be present in your operating room? What in your required medical staff policy on emergency equipment in the OR? Are your personnel trained in the use of emergency equipment and CPR whenever there is a patient in the facility?
